  Beware of the post work building inspection process if you, the homeowner secured the permit. You get an answering machine to leave your message about a needed followup inspection. No live person and no followup confirmation. If you are not home when they come to do it - remember they won't confirm with you when it will be - your "inspection fails" with a hearty penalty. For us it was 100 percent the cost of the permit. According to the building inspector supposedly "everyone knows about this" process and its been "like this for years" of you needing to be home when they arrive unannounced. It is not communicated to you anywhere in the permit process, online or when leaving the voice mail message requesting inspection. ASK up front when you secure your permit what their followup "practice" is and when you leave your message for the follow-up inspection make sure you tell them when YOU WILL BE HOME or be prepared to be fined. Terrible practice...
